About

This started as a simple HTML reference page to test CSS styling in about 2008.

What has long been a personal reference has morphed over more than a decade of working into my own highly-opinioned system. But I stand on the shoulders of the folks that came before me—designers and developers alike.

Why? For every project, I felt like I was starting over. For a long time, I figured that, since I wanted different look and feel, I needed a different system. But that lead to frustrating issues during the design process. I realized that there was an underlyng system that I could use across clients and projects that unifed the designs, despite looking very different.

I owe the largest debt of gratitude to John Kane. His book A Type Primer most certainly formed the foundation of my design interest (and it shows). But his tutelage and friendship influenced me more than he knows.
